Ben Yehuda Street
Ben Yehuda Street is the entertainment street of Jerusalem. On almost any given night one will be able to see singers, musicians, break-dancers, magicians, and more, entertaining the crowds of visitors who flock there to get a bite to eat, do some shopping, or who just want to hang out. Needless to say I got my fair share of Ben Yehuda Street more than once. Or maybe it’s better to say that Ben Yehuda Street got its fair share of me. One time my friend Max and I, who both share a love of music, decided to try and make a few extra shekels and have a jam session on Ben Yehuda St. I picked up my ukulele, he brought his guitar and harmonica, and we jammed the night away. We even attracted a few young Ethiopian fans who joined in our jam session. We had a great time and made just over 50 shekels (a little over 10 bucks)! So what did we do? We hit up the nearest falafel stop to satisfy our craving for that delicious middle-eastern-make-your-mouth-drool wonder food.
Speaking of food, I have to make mention one place not on Ben Yehuda but close by - Babette’s, the number one waffle bar. Everyone love’s Babette’s waffles which range from ice cream covered to chocolaty, buttery and everything all around and in between. If you ever go, you gotta try it! The only time I’ve ever seen Ben Yehuda Street empty was during the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur. To me it was comparable to seeing an empty times square – a place that’s always so lively to a place that’s desolate. Check out some pictures here. |
