Room of the Last Supper
Although the Room of the Last Supper was not all that I expected in appearance, it did not stop me from being able to envision the important events that took place there (or somewhere nearby). I imagine Christ sitting around a table with his Apostles, singing hymns, eating the Passover seder, visually teaching them, and instituting the ordinance of the sacrament for all his followers to do in remembrance of Him. It was not long after the events in the Room of the Last Supper that Jesus and his disciples descended north across the Kidron Valley, and into the Garden of Gethsemane. There He would pray and suffer the atonement for all the sins and pains of the world. To me, this room points my mind to that event and I believe that is what Christ would want, for that was the central point of all that He taught during the last supper – to point our minds towards His redeeming atonement and commission us to remember HIs body and blood which He sacrificed for each of us so that we could return to him. After Christ, the upper room may also have been used as a meeting place for church members (see Acts 1:13 & Acts 2:1-4;12:12). |
