Hezekiah's Wall
Also know as the Broad Wall, this wall is incredibly wide! That being said, it’s easy to determine its purpose – defense! During the time of constructing a tunnel to redirect the waters from the Gihon springs on the southeastern part of the city, Hezekiah built this U-shaped broad wall at it’s weakest point on the northern side of Jerusalem. Today, only the base of it exists but you can still see how wide it was (7 meters wide!) and in a certain area there is a giant ruler that shows you how tall it was anciently (8 meters high!). The city is now built over most of it but a red line on the streets show you where its remnants lie far below modern construction. All these fortifications, along with divine intervention, enabled them to escape destruction by the Assyrians in 701 BC. (See 2 Chron. 32:5; Neh. 3:8)
