The Citadel
December 27, 2009
“Went on a tour with Professor Sapir to ‘David’s Citadel’ in Old Jerusalem, which is not from King David’s time at all and was built by Herod (There is a Hashmonean wall which even predates Herod’s fortress)…” If you are on the southeastern side of the Old City, the Citadel is one of the standout structures in this area. The Citadel lies in what my professor called, “the Protestant Quarters,” and is literally a fortress guarded by high walls and towers, big gates, and even a mote. Inside I noticed a pile of cannon balls, evidence that this area actually was once used for its intended purpose. My favorite part was the climb to the top of one of the towers because there is such an amazing view of the city from up there. The structure today is also a museum of sorts featuring models of well known structures, maps, the famous colorful glass chandelier made by Dale Chihuly, and more. |
