The Church of Condemnation
September 4, 2009
“…We then began the walk [Via Dolorosa] a few blocks down at the Church of Condemnation and Flagelation Church. Along the way I was very impressed with the art and depictions within each church. I am glad they are there to pay respect and remembrance to what the Savior has done for us…” The Church of Condemnation is located just across from the Flagelation Church. It is said that is was built upon the area where Christ was condemned to death and where he took up His cross to begin His walk to Golgatha. Inside the chapel one can see original paving stones on the ground and the Roman games etched into their surface (similar to those found in the Ecce Homo fortress). Around the chapel are Bible verses in Latin. I later found out the translation which is this: PILATVS ADDVXIT FORAS JESVM ET SEDIT PRO TRIBVNALI IN LOCO QVIDICITVR LITHOSTROTOS HEBRAICE AVTEM GABBATHA JOANN, XIX 13; LAVIT MANVS CORAM POPVLO… DIMISIT ILLIS BARRABUM MATTH. XXVII 24,26 JESVM AVTEM TRADIDIT VOLVNTA EORVM LVC. XXIII 25 Pilate…brought Jesus forth and sat down in the judgment seat in the place that is called Lithostrotos and in Hebrew Gabbatha John 19:13; he washed his hands before the people…he released to them Barabbus Matt 27:24,26 he delivered Jesus to their will Luke 23:25 |
